Chapter 10 - The Beginning of the Report

Ryan was not arrested.
He was not handcuffed.
He was not removed from the apartment.
He did not learn the complete legal consequences.
Emily did not reveal every piece of evidence she had collected.
The story ended inside the luxury Chicago high-rise apartment, beneath warm chandelier light and cold city reflections, with the skyline glittering behind glass as if the world outside had no idea a marriage had collapsed in front of two officers.
Emily stood unshaken beside the marble island.
Her white satin dress and ivory blazer caught the light.
Her ice pack lay nearby.
The red scald marks on her cheek and neck remained visible, non-graphic but undeniable.
Her phone was raised.
Recording.
Two officers stood between her and Ryan, calm and decisive, their bodies forming a quiet barrier he could no longer cross.
Rachel gripped the edge of an open suitcase, pale-pink satin dress trembling around her knees, her smug triumph gone. Her eyes moved between the packed belongings, the hard drives, the report, and the ring as if each object had become another locked door.
Ryan stood frozen mid-step.
His fitted black shirt looked suddenly too polished for the panic tearing through his face.
His luxury watch flashed under the chandelier.
His phone lay useless on the island.
The wedding ring rested on the unreadable police report.
Emily’s voice remained in the air.
“Take one more step and finish your confession.”
Ryan’s lips trembled.
His eyes widened with the grotesque realization that the apartment no longer belonged to his version of events.
The laughter at the door was gone.
The plan to take Emily’s card was gone.
The confidence that she would cover the burns and apologize was gone.
Only the report remained.
Only the officers.
Only the recording phone.
Only Emily, standing wounded but mercilessly calm.

And as Ryan stared at the paper beneath the ring, he understood that what had already been reported was not the whole story.
It was only the first page.
