Chapter 6 - The Hard Drives

Rachel saw the hard drives first.

Small black rectangles packed carefully in the open suitcase near Emily’s white handbag.

They did not look dramatic.

They looked boring.

That was what made Rachel afraid.

She knew Ryan.

She knew he kept important things boring.

Files hidden under ordinary names.

Messages deleted then restored.

Accounts shared then denied.

Cameras installed then called security.

Threats spoken when only one person was supposed to remember them.

Rachel’s face drained.

Ryan followed her gaze.

His eyes landed on the hard drives.

For one second, all expression left him.

Emily saw that blankness.

It was worse than rage.

It meant he was searching memory.

What had he said?

What had he sent?

What had he done near a device he thought she would never check?

Emily did not reveal the contents.

Not every piece of evidence.

Not tonight.

The story would not show what was inside those drives.

It only showed Ryan realizing they existed.

He took one step toward the suitcase.

The officer blocked him immediately.

“Do not touch her belongings.”

Ryan’s eyes snapped up.

“They’re mine.”

Emily’s voice answered before the officer could.

“No.”

Simple.

Flat.

Unbreakable.

Rachel swallowed.

“Ryan…”

He ignored her.

“Emily, you have no idea what you’re doing.”

Emily’s hand tightened around the phone.

The burn on her cheek throbbed.

Her eyes watered from pain, but she did not wipe them.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.”

Ryan laughed once.

It sounded wrong.

Too sharp.

Too high.

The officers exchanged a brief glance.

Ryan noticed.

His arrogance began to rot into dread.

Emily looked toward the suitcase, then back at him.

“You thought I would come home from the emergency room and hide.”

Rachel clamped one hand over her mouth.

Ryan froze.

Emergency room.

The words filled the apartment.

Emily had not meant to say them loudly.

But now they hung between the chandelier and the skyline.

No details.

No treatment shown.

Just enough.
