Chapter 3 - The Ice Pack Comes Down

Emily’s hand still ached from holding the ice pack.
The cloth was damp now, warm at the edges, useless against the heat pulsing in her cheek and neck.
But she kept it near her face because pain gave her something physical to focus on.
Not Ryan’s eyes.
Not Rachel’s smug shock.
Not the apartment where she had once arranged flowers and believed love could be repaired by making things beautiful.
The officer beside her spoke gently without looking away from Ryan.
“Ma’am, stay behind us.”
Emily nodded once.
But she did not step back.
She had already stepped back for years.
Ryan’s attention snapped toward the ice pack.
His expression changed fast.
From panic to calculation.
“There is no proof I did that.”
The room went cold.
Even Rachel looked at him.
Emily lowered the ice pack fully.
The chandelier light revealed enough.
No graphic detail.
No need for more.
The officer’s jaw tightened.
Ryan noticed and instantly regretted speaking.
Emily’s phone stayed raised.
“You want to repeat that?”
Ryan’s lips parted.
No sound came.
Rachel’s fingers dug into the strap of her handbag.
“Ryan,” she whispered, “stop.”
He turned on her.
“Shut up.”
The word cracked across the room.
Rachel recoiled.
Emily’s eyes sharpened.
The officer closest to Ryan took one half-step forward.
Ryan froze again, furious at being checked by another man inside the home where he believed his voice should be law.
Emily did not smile.
Not yet.
She looked at Rachel.
For the first time, Rachel did not look triumphant.
She looked trapped beside the brother whose cruelty was no longer safely directed at someone else.
The skyline glittered behind them.
Chicago lights blinked through the glass.
The city kept moving beyond the windows while the apartment held its breath.
Emily set the ice pack on the marble island beside the police report.
Then she looked at Ryan again.
“You should be careful which lies you say near officers.”
His nostrils flared.
He wanted to shout.
He wanted to step forward.
He wanted to become the version of himself that made her flinch.

But the phone was still recording.
