Chapter 1 - The Folder on Elena’s Blanket
A critically injured woman secretly records her parents choosing her brother’s life over hers before a mysterious visitor enters and terrifies them.
Elena Brooks lay motionless beneath the oxygen mask.
Harsh fluorescent lights burned above the trauma bay, turning every face pale and every metal tray cold blue. IV tubing ran from her arm. A white bandage wrapped part of her blonde hair. A dark bruise marked one forearm, non-graphic but impossible to ignore.
Around her, medical staff moved fast but controlled.
A monitor beeped beside her bed.
Beyond a trauma curtain, her brother Julian was being treated off camera.
Then Raymond Brooks slammed a medical folder onto Elena’s blanket.
The impact made Nurse Chloe flinch.
Cordelia Brooks leaned over the bed, pale beige cardigan hanging from her shoulders, gold bracelets shaking as she pointed toward the neighboring curtain.
“Save Julian first. She has always been expendable.”
The room stopped breathing.
Dr. Nathan Cole stepped between them and Elena.
Raymond grabbed the folder and shoved it toward the doctor’s chest.
“If her heart stops, let her go.”
Elena did not open her eyes.
But beneath the blanket, one finger twitched.
Dr. Cole tore the folder from Raymond’s hand and threw it onto a metal tray.
“Neither of you controls whether this woman lives.”
Cordelia’s face twisted.
Raymond’s jaw clenched.
Nurse Chloe saw Elena’s index finger move again.
One millimeter.
Two taps.
Pause.
Three taps.
Chloe’s eyes widened.
Then Elena’s voice came through the oxygen mask, almost nothing.
“Record them.”
Chloe slipped her phone beneath the blanket.
Raymond noticed her leaning close and lunged toward the IV line.
Dr. Cole caught his wrist before he could touch it.
Then heavy footsteps approached.
The trauma-bay doors swung open.
Cold hallway light flooded the room.
A woman in a dark coat entered carrying a leather evidence bag, her face hidden in shadow.
Cordelia saw her.
