Chapter 6 - Raymond Reaches Too Far

Raymond moved fast.

Too fast for a man pretending concern.

His hand shot toward the blanket, not toward Elena’s face, not toward her shoulder, not toward comfort.

Toward the place Chloe had hidden the phone.

Chloe recoiled.

Dr. Cole caught Raymond’s wrist before he could reach the IV tubing.

The trauma bay snapped into motion.

A nurse stepped to Elena’s other side.

Another staff member moved the metal tray back.

Someone behind Dr. Cole lifted both hands, ready but controlled.

No one struck Raymond.

No one escalated beyond what was needed.

But the boundary became unmistakable.

Dr. Cole’s grip held Raymond away from the bed.

“Do not touch my patient.”

Raymond’s face contorted.

“Get your hands off me.”

“Step back.”

Cordelia grabbed the bedrail with both hands, eyes stretched wide with rage.

“You have no right!”

Elena heard her mother’s voice fracture.

Not from fear.

From losing control.

The concealed phone stayed beneath the blanket.

Still recording.

Raymond looked down at Dr. Cole’s hand on his wrist, then at the staff surrounding Elena.

For the first time, he seemed to understand he was outnumbered in a room where his last name had no authority.

Then the footsteps began.

Heavy.

Measured.

Approaching from the corridor.

Everyone heard them.

Even Raymond stopped struggling.

The trauma-bay doors trembled slightly before opening.

Cold white hallway light burst across the blue-gray room.

Medical staff turned.

Cordelia turned last.

A woman entered in a dark tailored coat over an elegant black suit.

Silver-blonde hair.

A leather evidence bag in one hand.

Her face hidden by backlight.

Cordelia’s body went rigid.

Then she whispered something no one else caught.

Recognition.

Terror.
