Chapter 2 - The Daughter They Thought Was Silent
Elena had learned silence early.
Not because she was quiet.
Because in the Brooks family, silence was the safest place a daughter could stand.
Julian cried, and Cordelia ran.
Julian failed, and Raymond paid.
Julian lied, and both parents rearranged truth around him like furniture.
Elena achieved, endured, apologized, recovered, and disappeared.
Even now, on a hospital bed, injured and masked, her parents treated her life like an obstacle between Julian and survival.
But she heard them.
Every word.
Expendable.
Let her go.
The words did not enter her like shock.
They entered like confirmation.
Her body could barely move. Her eyelids felt sealed with weight. The oxygen mask pressed against her face. Pain hovered behind the medication, distant but waiting.
Still, her mind was awake.
And her finger could move.
Two taps.
Pause.
Three taps.
The signal came from childhood.
Not with her parents.
With someone else.
Someone Cordelia had once forbidden her to mention.
Nurse Chloe bent close, pretending to check the blanket. Her dark hair was tucked beneath a surgical cap, her gloved fingers steady even though her eyes were not.
“Record them,” Elena whispered.
Chloe’s phone disappeared beneath the fold of the blanket.
No one else saw it.
Raymond was too busy trying to dominate the doctor.
Cordelia was too busy pretending grief looked like command.
Dr. Cole stood firm at the bedside.
Raymond pointed at the monitor.
“She has no directive giving you authority to prioritize her over Julian.”
Dr. Cole looked at him with cold disbelief.
“She is my patient.”
Cordelia snapped, “So is my son.”
“Then his doctors will treat him.”
Raymond’s nostrils flared.
“You don’t understand this family.”
Dr. Cole’s face hardened.
“I understand this room.”
Elena’s finger rested against the hidden phone.
She could feel its faint warmth beneath the blanket.
