Chapter 7 - The Woman in the Dark Coat

The mysterious woman did not rush.
That made her more frightening.
She crossed the trauma bay with controlled steps, dark coat moving around her like a shadow under fluorescent light. Her face stayed partially obscured, silver-blonde hair catching the cold glow from the hallway behind her.
She carried a dark leather evidence bag.
Not a purse.
Not luggage.
A bag with purpose.
Raymond released his clenched fist slowly as she approached.
Dr. Cole did not step away from Elena’s bed.
Chloe remained beside the blanket, one hand near the concealed phone.
Cordelia stared at the woman with the expression of someone seeing a locked room open inside her own memory.
Her lips trembled.
“No.”
The woman stopped inches from Raymond.
Her voice was low and lethal.
“Step away from that bed.”
Raymond’s face tightened.
“Who are you?”
Cordelia inhaled sharply.
Too sharply.
The woman did not answer.
That refusal terrified Cordelia more than any introduction could have.
Raymond looked at his wife.
“You know her?”
Cordelia shook her head.
Too fast.
The woman’s gaze remained on Raymond.
“I said step away.”
Raymond did.
One step.
Then another.
Everyone saw it.
The man who had shoved folders at doctors and spoken about Elena’s heart like a negotiable object obeyed a stranger whose face was still hidden.
Elena’s finger shifted near the phone.
Chloe looked down quickly.
The recording was still active.
Cordelia saw Elena’s finger move.
This time, she understood.
Her eyes stretched impossibly wide.
“She’s awake?”
Dr. Cole turned toward her, furious.
“You assumed she wasn’t listening?”
Cordelia staggered back from the bedrail.
The mysterious woman looked toward Elena.
For one brief second, her hard posture softened.
Not enough to reveal who she was.

Enough to show she had come for Elena.
