Chapter 5 - Nurse Chloe Understands the Taps

Nurse Chloe had seen patients communicate through blinks, squeezes, taps, and silence.

Families often missed those signs because they were too frightened.

Or too self-absorbed.

But Chloe had been trained to notice life in small movements.

Elena’s finger taps were not random.

Two.

Pause.

Three.

Then the whisper.

Record them.

Chloe did not ask Elena to repeat it.

That would draw attention.

She only lowered her phone beneath the blanket and angled it carefully enough to capture voices without exposing the device.

Her own pulse hammered.

This was not a normal family conflict.

Normal families begged doctors to save everyone.

Normal parents did not arrive with folders and conditions.

Normal mothers did not call daughters expendable while standing beside the bed.

Chloe kept her body calm.

She checked the oxygen mask without moving it unsafely.

She checked the IV tubing without exposing the phone.

She adjusted the blanket to protect Elena’s hand.

Cordelia watched suspiciously.

“What are you doing?”

“Monitoring her response.”

“She’s unconscious.”

Chloe looked at her.

“She is injured. That is not the same thing.”

Cordelia’s lips pressed thin.

Raymond stepped nearer.

“Move away from her.”

Dr. Cole immediately turned.

“No.”

Raymond’s eyes bulged.

“I am her father.”

“And I am the physician responsible for this bed.”

The words struck hard.

Elena’s finger moved again.

One tap.

Chloe looked down.

Elena’s eyes remained closed, but a tear slipped from beneath one lash line.

Chloe’s throat tightened.

She wanted to take Elena’s hand.

She wanted to promise safety.

She could not promise enough.

So she kept recording.

Sometimes care was not a speech.

Sometimes care was a hidden phone beneath a hospital blanket while powerful people exposed themselves.

Then Raymond saw Chloe’s angle.

His face changed.

“What’s under there?”
