Chapter 3 - Dr. Cole Refuses the Folder
The folder bothered Dr. Cole from the moment Raymond carried it in.
Not because it looked official.
Because Raymond held it like a weapon.
He had not asked about Elena’s breathing.
He had not asked whether she was in pain.
He had not asked if she could hear them.
He asked whether Julian had been seen first.
Then he produced papers.
Unreadable to the camera.
Untrusted by the doctor.
Pressed forward with the certainty of a man used to paperwork turning human beings into permissions.
Dr. Cole threw the folder onto the metal tray.
Raymond’s eyes stretched wide.
“You don’t throw away legal documents.”
“I don’t let relatives weaponize them during active trauma care.”
Cordelia gasped theatrically.
“She is our daughter.”
Dr. Cole turned toward her.
“Then act like it.”
The nurses froze.
Even the monitor seemed louder after that.
Cordelia’s face twisted with humiliation.
Raymond took one aggressive step forward.
Dr. Cole did not move back.
Elena listened.
Somewhere beneath fear, something warm and painful rose in her chest.
A stranger was defending her life more fiercely than the people who gave it to her.
Nurse Chloe adjusted the blanket near Elena’s hand so the concealed phone stayed hidden. Her thumb brushed Elena’s finger once.
A signal.
I heard you.
Elena could not cry because her body would not obey fully.
But her finger moved again.
One tiny tap.
Chloe saw it.
Cordelia did not.
Raymond grabbed the folder from the tray and opened it halfway, angling it toward Dr. Cole without letting him properly examine it.
“This authorizes medical discretion.”
Dr. Cole’s eyes narrowed.
“No readable review, no confirmation, no relevance while she is unstable.”
Cordelia hissed, “You are wasting time.”
“No,” Dr. Cole said. “You are.”
The trauma bay doors remained closed.
For now.
But every person in the room felt pressure building beyond them.
