Chapter 8 - The Evidence Bag

The leather evidence bag never opened.
That made it unbearable.
Raymond kept staring at it.
Cordelia could not stop looking either.
Dr. Cole noticed both reactions.
So did Chloe.
The mysterious woman placed the bag on a nearby counter, carefully out of Raymond’s reach. The motion was controlled, deliberate, and silent.
No documents shown.
No names revealed.
No secret explained.
Only a bag.
Only panic.
Cordelia’s face had gone ashen.
The cruelty that had filled her voice minutes earlier had vanished. In its place was a terror so deep it made her look suddenly older.
Raymond whispered, “Cordelia.”
She did not answer.
He grabbed her arm.
She flinched from him.
That small movement told the room there were fractures even inside their united cruelty.
The mysterious woman turned her head slightly.
Her face remained hidden from full view.
“Elena is not to be left alone with either of them.”
Dr. Cole nodded once.
“Agreed.”
Raymond exploded.
“You don’t get to make that decision.”
The woman looked at him.
He stopped.
Again.
The silence that followed was sharp enough to cut.
Elena’s breathing changed under the mask.
Chloe leaned close.
“Stay with us,” she whispered.
Elena’s finger tapped once.
The mysterious woman heard the faint sound.
Her posture shifted.
She came closer to the bed, but not too close, not crowding, not touching without permission.
Cordelia backed away another step.
Miriam? No.
Not Miriam.
Not anyone the room knew.
Only someone Cordelia knew.
Someone connected to a twenty-nine-year-old secret the story refused to reveal.
Cordelia whispered, “You shouldn’t be here.”
The woman answered without looking at her.
“Neither should this folder.”
Raymond looked at the forged medical folder on the tray.

His face drained.
