Chapter 3 - The Electrician at the Driveway

The electrician did not know the Davis family story.
He did not know why Brenda hated the daughter on the porch.
He did not know why Melanie stood in gold like she had been waiting to inherit someone else’s life.
He did not know why Gregory still held a brick while Wyatt knelt with Sadie in his arms.
He only knew what he had seen.
Enough.
His phone stayed raised as he moved from the utility truck toward the driveway.
“Stay back!” Wyatt shouted, though his eyes never left Sadie’s face.
The electrician stopped just far enough away to keep recording.
Gregory lowered the brick slightly.
Not enough.
Wyatt saw the hesitation and pulled Sadie closer, one arm behind her shoulders, one hand careful near her face.
“Sadie, keep your eyes on me.”
Her gaze fluttered.
She tried.
Brenda stepped forward, voice suddenly sharp.
“This is private family business.”
The electrician’s eyes snapped to her.
“You call that private?”
Brenda’s mouth opened, but no answer came.
Melanie moved one step back into the doorway.
Her confidence was disappearing in pieces.
Sadie’s engagement ring caught the sunlight as her hand slid weakly against Wyatt’s jacket.
Wyatt saw it and nearly broke.
He had promised her he would stand beside her today.
He had not known he would have to catch her from her father.
Gregory pointed the brick toward the electrician.
“You didn’t see anything.”
The electrician’s phone remained steady.
“I saw plenty.”
Brenda grabbed Gregory’s arm.
“Stop talking.”
That was when Sadie understood something through the fog of pain.
Her mother was not scared of what happened.

She was scared of what had been witnessed.
