Chapter 9 - Recognition

Recognition moved through Gregory before words did.

It began in his eyes.

Then his mouth.

Then his shoulders.

The man who had raised a brick at his daughter now looked as if the old witness had reached through the window and taken the bones out of him.

Wyatt saw it.

Sadie saw part of it.

The electrician recorded all of it.

Brenda clutched Gregory’s arm.

“Stop staring.”

Gregory whispered something too low for the others to hear.

The elderly man behind the curtain lowered his hand from the glass.

For one second, Wyatt thought he might retreat.

Instead, the old man stayed.

That choice broke Brenda’s face.

Melanie backed into the doorway.

Her gold dress caught the sunlight, but she looked smaller now.

Less favored daughter.

More frightened accomplice to a story older than she understood.

Sadie’s fingers found Wyatt’s sleeve.

Her voice was barely there.

“Don’t let them take me inside.”

Wyatt’s face tightened with pain.

“They won’t.”

Gregory heard her.

Something like shame flickered across his face.

Then vanished beneath panic.

The electrician’s voice remained steady.

“Help is coming.”

No sirens were shown.

No police entered.

No arrests.

No legal outcome.

Only the porch.

The brick.

The damaged phone.

The witness outside.

The witness inside.

Gregory looked trapped between all of it.

He turned toward Wyatt as if to argue.

Then his eyes slid back to the window.

He could not stop looking at the old man.
