Chapter 5 - The Curtain Moves

The living-room curtain shifted.
Just once.
A thin movement behind glass.
Melanie saw it first.
Then Brenda.
Then Gregory.
Wyatt noticed only because all three of them looked away from Sadie at the same time.
He followed their gaze.
Behind the partly closed curtain, a hand appeared.
Old.
Trembling.
Pressed against the glass.
Sadie blinked through the blur.
She could not see clearly.
Only a dark cardigan.
A white shirt.
Thin gray hair behind the curtain.
An elderly man stood inside the house, partially obscured, watching the porch with an expression that turned Gregory’s rage into terror.
Gregory’s face drained ghost white.
The brick dropped lower in his hand.
Brenda clutched his sleeve so hard her knuckles turned pale.
Melanie staggered backward toward the doorway.
The electrician kept recording.
“Sir?” he called toward the window. “Can you hear me?”
The elderly man did not answer.
He only stared at Gregory.
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Recognizing.
That was what changed everything.
Sadie saw Gregory’s reaction and felt a colder fear beneath the pain.
This was not the first time that old man had seen something.
Wyatt looked from the window to Gregory.
“Who is he?”
Gregory said nothing.
Brenda whispered, “Don’t.”
The word was too small.
Too late.
The elderly witness remained behind the curtain, one trembling hand on the glass, eyes fixed on Gregory as if a secret had just stepped into daylight.
No identity revealed.
No old will opened.
No explanation.
Only recognition.

And Gregory’s face told everyone the man mattered.
