Chapter 8 - The Man Behind the Glass

The elderly man did not open the door.

He did not speak through the window.

He did not reveal his name.

He simply stood behind the living-room curtain, thin gray hair catching a blade of afternoon light, one trembling hand pressed against the glass.

Gregory stared as though looking at a ghost.

Brenda whispered again, “Gregory, don’t look at him.”

That made Wyatt’s eyes narrow.

“Why not?”

No answer.

The electrician shifted his camera slightly, capturing the window, the porch, the brick, Sadie, and Gregory’s face.

Gregory noticed.

“Stop filming my house.”

The electrician did not move.

“I’m filming because someone is hurt.”

“She fell.”

The lie came too late and too weak.

Wyatt’s voice turned lethal.

“She did not fall.”

Sadie’s eyelids fluttered.

She wanted to say something.

Maybe to confirm.

Maybe to warn Wyatt.

Maybe to ask who the old man was.

But her strength faded in and out.

Wyatt felt her weight change and lowered her more securely against his chest.

“Stay with me.”

Brenda suddenly stepped toward the brick as if to move it.

The electrician shouted, “Don’t touch that.”

She froze.

Everyone looked at the brick.

A simple red object on the porch.

No longer just a weapon.

Evidence.

Gregory’s eyes went again to the window.

The elderly man’s mouth trembled behind the glass.

Whatever he knew, it had waited too long.

Now it had watched too much to remain hidden.
