Chapter 6 - The Brick Falls

Gregory finally dropped the brick.
It hit the porch with a dull, ugly sound.
Everyone flinched except Wyatt.
His entire focus remained on Sadie.
The brick rolled once and stopped near the cracked smartphone.
Two objects on the steps.
One used to hurt.
One used to call for help.
Brenda’s eyes darted between them and the electrician’s phone.
“Gregory, we need to go inside.”
Wyatt’s voice cut through her.
“No one is moving her except medical help.”
Brenda glared at him.
“You don’t give orders here.”
Wyatt looked up slowly.
His face was white with fury.
“I do when she is bleeding in my arms.”
Brenda recoiled.
Melanie covered her mouth.
Sadie’s eyes opened slightly.
“Wyatt…”
“I’m here.”
Her hand tightened weakly on his jacket.
The electrician approached a few steps closer, still careful, still recording.
“Ambulance is on the way.”
Gregory’s eyes remained locked on the living-room window.
The elderly man had not moved.
His hand stayed against the glass.
A witness inside.
A witness outside.
A damaged phone on the steps.
A brick on the porch.
Brenda’s laughter was gone completely.
The family’s control had always depended on making Sadie feel alone inside a full house.
Now the porch was full of proof.
Sadie turned her head slightly, enough to see the curtain.
The old man’s silhouette blurred in and out through her dazed vision.
She did not know who he was.
But she saw what he did to Gregory.
Fear.

Real fear.
