Chapter 7 - Brenda Stops Performing

Brenda Davis was excellent at performance.

The wounded mother.

The elegant hostess.

The woman disappointed by a difficult daughter.

The victim of Sadie’s “drama.”

But the camera destroyed her rhythm.

The electrician’s phone stayed raised.

Wyatt’s broken phone lay near the brick.

The curtain still showed the outline of the elderly man.

Brenda could not decide which audience to play for.

She turned to the electrician first.

“You don’t understand what she has done to this family.”

He stared at Sadie in Wyatt’s arms.

“I understand what he just did to her.”

Brenda’s mouth trembled.

She turned to Wyatt.

“She pushed him.”

Wyatt’s eyes widened with disbelief.

“She was standing behind me.”

Melanie looked down.

That tiny refusal to support Brenda’s lie made Brenda snap toward her.

“Say something.”

Melanie’s lips parted.

Nothing came out.

The silence became betrayal.

Gregory heard it and turned.

His face was still pale.

“Melanie.”

She looked at the brick.

Then at Sadie.

Then at the electrician’s phone.

“I didn’t see everything,” she whispered.

Brenda’s face twisted violently.

That was not support.

Not enough.

Sadie heard it and almost laughed, but pain stopped her.

Of course Melanie would not tell the truth.

But she also would not lie clearly while being recorded.

That tiny gap mattered.

Wyatt looked at the electrician.

“Keep filming.”

The electrician nodded.

Gregory’s jaw clenched.

Behind the curtain, the elderly man slowly shifted closer to the window, more of his face entering the light.

Gregory stumbled back one step.
