Chapter 1 - They Found Her

A hospitalized woman preserves evidence against the parents who attacked her as six witnesses and an elderly stranger arrive with a sealed family secret.

Sadie Davis woke to footsteps.

Heavy.

Fast.

Furious.

They thundered down the private hospital corridor outside her room in Columbus, Ohio, followed by muffled shouting and the squeak of nurses moving too quickly.

Her swollen left eye opened wider.

Pain flashed across her bruised face.

Her bandaged hand tightened around Wyatt Campbell’s sleeve.

The IV line tugged against her forearm.

“Wyatt… they found me.”

Wyatt was already moving.

He surged up from the chair beside her bed, white dress shirt wrinkled, jaw grinding, dark eyes snapping toward the door as the handle shook.

He stepped between Sadie and the entrance.

Not beside her.

In front of her.

The hospital door flew open.

Gregory Davis stormed in first, red-faced, massive shoulders filling the doorway. Brenda swept in behind him in a cream wrap dress and pearls, her cruel smile almost theatrical. Melanie followed with crossed arms, dusty-pink dress sharp against the white hospital walls.

Gregory pointed directly at Sadie.

“Move aside! She already ruined this family!”

Wyatt planted both feet.

Gregory lunged.

Wyatt did not strike him.

He simply blocked him with his body, forcing him back from the bed.

Brenda slid around them, eyes shining as she leaned over the rail toward Sadie’s swollen face.

“Let’s see if he still loves you now.”

Sadie recoiled.

Wyatt caught Brenda’s wrist before her hand reached the blanket and shoved it away from the bed.

Nurses rushed into the doorway.

Melanie tried to push past them.

Sadie’s trembling hand slipped beneath the white blanket.

She pulled out a clear evidence bag containing a damaged phone and stained fabric.

Her tears poured, but her expression hardened.

She raised the bag toward the older attorney standing near the doorway.

“Preserve everything they touched.”

Gregory stopped struggling.

Brenda’s smile vanished.

Behind the attorney, six shadowed witnesses gathered in the corridor.

Then an elderly man stepped forward holding an aged leather envelope.

Gregory’s face turned ghost white.

The old man lifted the envelope.
