Chapter 9 - Sadie Looks at Wyatt

Sadie turned toward Wyatt.

Not her parents.

Not the attorney.

Not the elderly witness.

Wyatt.

He was standing beside her bed, body angled between her and the room, jaw clenched, one hand gripping the rail so hard his knuckles whitened.

His eyes met hers.

For the first time since the door burst open, she saw confusion in him.

Not doubt.

Never doubt.

Confusion because the scene had grown beyond the injuries he had come to protect.

The damaged phone.

The blood-stained fabric.

The six witnesses.

The old leather envelope.

Gregory’s terror.

Brenda’s panic.

Melanie’s retreat.

Something larger had been hiding beneath the violence.

Sadie reached for him with her bandaged hand.

He immediately lowered his hand into hers, careful around the IV.

“I’m here,” he said softly, though the line did not count in the locked dialogue of the scene; it lived more in his lips and expression than sound.

Sadie squeezed weakly.

Her eyes returned to the old man.

The envelope still had not opened.

The attorney stepped fully into the room now, standing between the doorway and the family.

Gregory looked trapped.

Brenda’s makeup had begun to crease around her tears.

Melanie’s arms hung at her sides, all smugness gone.

The witnesses behind them remained silent.

Sadie’s voice was faint.

“Preserve everything,” she had said.

Now she understood everything might include things she had never known existed.

Gregory pointed at the old man with a shaking finger.

“You were paid to stay away.”

The room froze.

Brenda made a strangled sound.

Melanie stared at her father.

Sadie’s heart monitor jumped.

The old man did not answer.

He only held the envelope closer.

Wyatt’s face changed.

Recognition began, but not understanding.

The sentence had revealed too much and not enough.

Paid.

Stay away.

The attorney looked sharply at Gregory.

Gregory realized what he had said.
