Chapter 5 - The Damaged Phone

The damaged phone inside the clear evidence bag looked ordinary.

A cracked screen.

A bent corner.

A smear near the case.

A device any family could dismiss as broken junk if it were not sealed, labeled, and clutched to a hospital gown by a daughter they had expected to silence.

Sadie stared at it.

Her fingers shook.

The phone had been in her hand before everything went black.

She did not replay what happened.

No flashback.

No memory scene.

Only the present weight of the object.

The attorney stepped closer, careful not to crowd her.

“Sadie, may I take custody of that bag?”

Wyatt looked at her, waiting for her choice.

That mattered.

Everyone else in her family had always reached.

Grabbed.

Took.

Decided.

Corrected her version before she finished speaking.

The attorney asked.

Sadie looked at Wyatt.

He nodded once.

Only once.

Not telling her what to do.

Telling her he would stand there either way.

Sadie slowly extended the evidence bag.

The attorney accepted it with both hands.

Brenda lunged forward.

“No!”

Wyatt moved instantly.

So did the nurses.

Brenda stopped before contact, pearls swinging violently.

Everyone saw the lunge.

Everyone saw the panic.

Everyone saw the phone leave Sadie’s hand and enter the attorney’s custody.

Melanie’s eyes stretched wide.

“Mom,” she whispered.

Brenda’s face twisted toward her daughter.

“Be quiet.”

That command sounded familiar.

Sadie’s bruised eye narrowed.

So many childhood rooms returned in one tone.

But she stayed in the hospital present.

White walls.

City-window light.

IV line.

Wyatt beside her.

Evidence preserved.

Gregory pointed at the attorney.

“You have no authority here.”

The attorney’s expression stayed tense but controlled.

“That depends on what authority you are afraid I have.”

Gregory’s mouth opened.

Closed.

The six witnesses shifted behind him.

No one revealed statements.

No one revealed the will.

No one revealed legal consequences.

But the pressure became physical.

Sadie leaned back against the pillow, exhausted.

Still, her eyes stayed focused.

Brenda saw it and trembled.
