Chapter 6 - Melanie Stops Smiling

Melanie had arrived with the look of someone enjoying her sister’s downfall.
Dusty-pink dress.
Perfect blonde hair.
Jewelry bright enough to announce innocence she did not possess.
She had stood behind Gregory and Brenda like a witness for the wrong side, arms crossed, mouth curved in cold satisfaction.
Now she looked young.
Frightened.
Not sorry yet.
Only frightened.
Sadie watched her sister’s transformation with a sadness she did not have strength to fully feel.
Melanie had always known how to survive by standing near the loudest person in the room.
As children, that had been Gregory.
Later, Brenda.
Sometimes both.
Melanie learned early that if she laughed when Sadie cried, she would not become the next target.
At some point, survival became personality.
Now, in the hospital room, Melanie’s mask cracked because the loudest people were losing control.
The attorney held the evidence bag.
Wyatt stood between the bed and Gregory.
The nurses blocked the door.
Witnesses filled the corridor.
And an elderly man at the back of the group had not yet stepped forward.
Melanie saw him first.
Her eyes narrowed.
Then widened.
Not full recognition.
A disturbance.
Like she had seen him somewhere she was not supposed to remember.
Gregory had not noticed him yet.
Brenda was still staring at the evidence bag.
Sadie followed Melanie’s gaze.
The elderly man stood partly hidden behind a paramedic, thin gray hair, worn brown coat, both hands clutching an aged leather envelope against his chest.
Sadie did not know him.
But something about him made the air tighten.
Wyatt noticed her looking.
He turned.
The elderly man lowered his eyes for one second, as if ashamed it had taken him this long to step forward.
Then he moved closer.
The corridor seemed to part.
The attorney looked back.
His face changed with guarded recognition.
Gregory finally turned.
The moment he saw the man, all the blood left his face.
Brenda grabbed his arm.
“What is he doing here?”
Melanie took a step backward.
Sadie’s heart began to hammer against the monitor leads.
