Chapter 3 - Brenda’s Smile Breaks

Brenda Davis had entered the hospital room smiling.
Not happily.
Triumphantly.
Her cream wrap dress was perfect, her pearl necklace centered, her earrings catching the cold daylight from the city windows. She looked like a woman arriving at a charity luncheon, not the bedside of a daughter with facial injuries and bandaged arms.
That was what disturbed Wyatt most.
Not Gregory’s rage.
Rage at least admitted itself.
Brenda’s cruelty wore elegance.
She looked at Sadie’s bruised face as if it were a lesson successfully delivered.
Then Sadie raised the evidence bag.
Brenda’s smile died.
The change was immediate and grotesque.
Her lips tightened.
Her eyes widened.
Her hand flew toward Gregory’s sleeve.
“What is that?” she demanded.
Sadie did not answer.
The attorney stepped one pace forward.
“Do not approach the bed.”
Brenda stared at him.
“This is my daughter.”
Wyatt’s voice cut through the room.
“Then start acting like it.”
Brenda turned on him, face twisting.
“You know nothing about daughters.”
Wyatt moved closer to the bed rail, shielding Sadie without touching her injuries.
“I know she begged me not to let you near her.”
The sentence struck the room.
A nurse at the doorway inhaled sharply.
Melanie’s arms loosened from their crossed position.
Gregory’s face reddened further.
“She lies.”
Sadie’s hand trembled around the evidence bag.
Wyatt wanted to take it from her so she would not have to carry anything else.
But she held it tighter.
Not because she was afraid of losing it.
Because it was the first thing in the room that obeyed her.
Evidence did not laugh.
Evidence did not rewrite.
Evidence did not call her dramatic.
Evidence did not tell her to be grateful the family still accepted her.
Brenda’s eyes darted to the damaged phone.
“What did you record?”
Sadie looked at her mother.
The room froze around the question.
Brenda realized too late that she had asked the wrong thing.
Not what happened?
Not are you okay?
What did you record?
The attorney’s expression hardened.
Wyatt saw the answer land across every face in the doorway.
Sadie’s voice was weak but clear.
May you like
“Enough for you to be scared.”
