Chapter 7 - The Man From the House

No one said the elderly man’s name.
That made his presence worse.
He stepped into the hospital doorway with an aged leather envelope pressed to his chest, shoulders slightly bent beneath his worn brown coat.
He looked fragile.
But Gregory looked destroyed.
Wyatt saw that contrast immediately.
A heavy, raging father in a wrinkled shirt turning ghost white at the sight of a thin old man with trembling hands.
Brenda clutched Gregory’s arm hard enough to wrinkle his sleeve.
“Tell him to leave,” she whispered.
Gregory did not speak.
Melanie backed into the wall near the nurses.
The attorney’s folder remained open just enough to show witness tabs.
He watched the old man carefully.
Sadie stared from the bed, bruised face half-shadowed by daylight from the city windows.
“Who is he?” she asked.
No one answered.
That silence told her the man mattered.
The elderly witness looked at Sadie then.
His eyes filled with grief.
Not pity.
Guilt.
“I am sorry,” he said, but the prompt allowed only the locked dialogue near the ending, so his apology remained inside his face, not spoken aloud.
He raised the envelope slightly.
Gregory finally found his voice.
“You have no right.”
The old man’s hands shook.
The envelope trembled.
The attorney stepped aside, allowing him just enough space to be seen by everyone in the room.
Brenda’s face twisted.
“Gregory, stop him.”
Wyatt moved closer to Sadie’s bed.
Not because the old man threatened her.
Because the room had changed again, and he wanted her to feel one steady body beside her.
Sadie’s bandaged hand found the blanket.
Her fingers curled into the white fabric.
The monitor beeped a little faster.
The doctor was not yet in frame, but the nurses heard it and glanced toward her.
Wyatt bent slightly.
“Breathe.”
Sadie breathed.
Once.
Twice.
The old man looked directly at Gregory.
His voice shook but did not break.
“I saw what you did… and I know why.”
The room stopped.

Gregory’s fear became terror.
