Chapter 1 - The Call in the Freezing Rain

A police integrity lawyer finds her bruised mother handcuffed while relatives and officers try to hide what happened.

Evelyn Hale’s phone vibrated so violently through the car speakers that it cut through the sound of freezing rain striking the windshield.

She was three blocks from the Westbridge precinct when her mother’s voice came through.

Small.

Broken.

Terrified.

“Evelyn… Dana hurt me, and they’re calling me unstable.”

Evelyn’s fingers tightened around the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white.

Her gray-green eyes lifted toward the road.

The rain blurred the streetlights into long, shaking lines.

Her voice dropped into something cold and urgent.

“Sign nothing. Say nothing. I’m coming.”

She ended the call and drove harder.

Two minutes later, the precinct doors burst open.

Cold rain swept in behind her black business suit as she entered with fierce, controlled speed.

Then she saw her mother.

Margaret Hale sat on a metal bench under harsh fluorescent light, one wrist locked in handcuffs, messy gray-brown hair sticking to her bruised face, torn white blouse hanging loose at one shoulder.

Evelyn’s black handbag slipped from her hand and hit the floor.

Across the room, Dana threw herself against Michael’s chest, emerald dress shining as fake tears poured down her face.

“She attacked me! She doesn’t know what she’s doing!”

Michael stood behind Dana and refused to meet his mother’s eyes.

Evelyn moved between them and Margaret.

She dropped to one knee, photographed the bruises, the handcuffs, the bench, the wet footprints.

Then she saw an officer quietly reaching toward his body camera.

Evelyn surged upright and caught his wrist before the red light disappeared.

Captain Robert Ross stormed from the back office.

“This is a private family matter. Get out of my station!”

Evelyn released the officer’s wrist and slowly turned toward him.

Then she raised her phone and photographed Ross, the disabled body camera, the open evidence-room door, and Margaret’s handcuffs in one sweeping motion.

The desk officer stared at Evelyn’s face.

His expression changed.

He recoiled, then snapped into a rigid salute.

Evelyn spoke into her phone.

“Preserve everything.”

Ross went pale.

Dana grabbed Michael’s sleeve.

And Margaret stared at her daughter like hope had just walked through the precinct door.
