Chapter 8 - Ross Loses the Room

Captain Robert Ross had entered like a man expecting obedience.
He had thundered from the back office, finger stabbing toward the exit, voice booming under the fluorescent lights.
This is a private family matter. Get out of my station.
At first, it had worked on everyone except Evelyn.
Now the words hung around him like evidence of bias.
Private family matter.
His niece was involved.
His officers were present.
A body camera had nearly gone dark.
An evidence-room door stood open.
An injured woman sat cuffed to a bench.
Ross adjusted his badge near his belt, but the gesture no longer looked authoritative.
It looked defensive.
Evelyn stepped toward him.
“Why is the evidence-room door open?”
Ross’s jaw clenched.
“Operational necessity.”
“What operation?”
No answer.
“Why was my mother cuffed by one wrist instead of medically examined?”
No answer.
“Why was Dana not separated from Michael before statements were taken?”
Dana’s eyes widened.
Michael looked at Ross.
Ross’s face hardened.
“You are not asking questions in my station.”
The desk officer spoke quietly.
“Captain…”
Ross spun on him.
“What?”
The officer stopped, but the damage was done.
An officer had almost interrupted him.
In front of Evelyn.
In front of Dana.
In front of the body cameras.
Ross’s control cracked deeper.
Evelyn looked at the desk officer.
She did not ask him to explain the salute.
She did not reveal why he recognized her.
She only said, “Keep your camera visible.”
He nodded.
Ross’s face drained further.
Margaret’s hand trembled inside the cuff.
Evelyn saw it.
Her voice hardened.
“Unlock her wrist.”
Ross snapped, “No.”
The refusal landed too loudly.
Too personally.

Too late.
