Chapter 9 - Margaret’s Hope

Margaret had stopped expecting rescue sometime before Evelyn arrived.

Evelyn could see it in her mother’s posture.

The bent shoulders.

The shaking hand.

The way she looked at each officer as if asking permission to breathe.

That was what hurt most.

Not the bruise.

Not the handcuff.

The reduction.

Margaret Hale had raised two children, buried a husband, worked double shifts, cared for neighbors, remembered birthdays, and still apologized when she needed help.

Now she sat in a precinct being called unstable by people who benefited from her silence.

Evelyn knelt beside her again.

“I need you to listen to me.”

Margaret nodded weakly.

“Do not explain anything to anyone unless I am beside you.”

Ross scoffed.

Evelyn ignored him.

“Do not sign anything.”

Margaret’s eyes moved to Dana.

Dana stiffened.

Evelyn followed the glance.

“There were papers?”

Dana erupted.

“She’s confused!”

Evelyn looked at Ross.

“What papers?”

Ross’s expression went blank.

Too blank.

Michael whispered, “Dana…”

Dana slapped her hand over his arm.

“Shut up.”

The word came out raw.

Not theatrical.

Real.

The station heard it.

Michael froze.

Dana realized what she had done.

Evelyn slowly stood.

“Thank you.”

Dana’s face twisted violently.

“For what?”

“For forgetting to perform.”

Ross stepped forward.

“That’s enough.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“It is.”

The phone remained in her hand.

The cameras remained on.

The evidence-room door remained open.

The desk officer remained rigid.

Margaret stared at Evelyn with stunned hope now, fragile but growing.

No one had unlocked the cuff yet.

No one had been arrested.

No final outcome had arrived.

But the room no longer belonged entirely to Ross.
