Chapter 10 - The Salute No One Explains

Evelyn’s exact government position was not revealed.

The confidential audit was not mentioned.

Margaret was not shown being released.

No arrest happened.

No final outcome was given.

The story ended inside the modern Westbridge police precinct under cold fluorescent light, with rain streaking the glass walls, officers frozen in tense silence, the evidence-room door still open, and Margaret Hale still seated on the metal bench with one wrist cuffed.

Evelyn stood between her mother and the rest of the room in her fitted black suit, phone raised, eyes sharp and calm.

Margaret looked up at her daughter through one swollen bruised eye, torn blouse gathered at her chest, hope trembling across her devastated face.

Dana stood behind Evelyn in her emerald dress, fake tears gone, one hand gripping Michael’s sleeve with sudden panic.

Michael’s mouth hung open as he stared from Dana to his mother, finally understanding the story he had helped carry might be collapsing.

Captain Ross gripped the front desk, face pale, his arrogance cracked by the photographs, the body camera, the open evidence-room door, and the command he could not trace.

The desk officer stood rigid near the station counter.

He had recognized Evelyn.

He had saluted.

No one explained why.

That made the silence worse.

Evelyn lowered her phone slightly, but her voice stayed lethal.

“Preserve everything.”

Ross looked toward the officer.

The officer did not move.

Dana whispered Michael’s name, but he did not answer.

Margaret began to cry quietly, not from fear this time, but from the shock of being believed before anyone officially said so.

Evelyn looked once at the disabled body camera.

Then at the open evidence-room door.

Then at Ross.

No final consequence came.

Only recognition.

May you like

Panic.

And the sudden understanding that whatever had happened to Margaret Hale inside that precinct was no longer staying inside that precinct.
