Chapter 3 - Dana’s Perfect Fear

Dana knew how to cry for an audience.
Evelyn saw it immediately.
The trembling lip.
The hand pressed to the chest.
The dramatic recoil whenever Margaret shifted.
The way she leaned against Michael just enough to look fragile while still controlling where he stood.
Dana pointed toward Margaret again.
“She was screaming. She was confused. She grabbed me.”
Margaret shook her head weakly.
“No…”
Ross cut in.
“Mrs. Hale became unstable during questioning.”
Evelyn turned toward him.
“Questioning without counsel?”
Ross smiled coldly.
“She wasn’t under arrest.”
Evelyn lifted Margaret’s cuffed wrist.
The metal rattled.
“Then what is this?”
The room went silent.
Ross’s jaw tightened.
“Temporary restraint.”
“For whose safety?”
Dana answered too fast.
“Mine.”
Evelyn looked at Dana’s emerald dress.
No damage.
No scratches visible.
No blood.
No torn fabric.
Then she looked at Margaret’s bruised eye.
Torn blouse.
Shaking hands.
The imbalance was obscene.
Evelyn raised her phone again.
Dana’s eyes widened.
“Stop filming me.”
“I’m documenting the room.”
“You can’t do that.”
Ross stepped closer.
“She said stop.”
The desk officer made a small movement, then froze again when Evelyn glanced toward him.
Evelyn’s voice remained calm.
“Captain, are you ordering me to stop preserving possible evidence?”
Ross’s face darkened.
He understood the trap only after stepping into it.
“No one said evidence.”
Evelyn’s eyes moved to the open evidence-room door.
“Then close that door.”
No one moved.
That was the second trap.
If Ross ordered it closed now, he admitted it should not have been open.
If he left it open, Evelyn would keep photographing it.
Dana’s tears faltered.
Michael whispered, “Uncle Rob…”
The word struck the room.
Uncle.
Evelyn turned slowly toward Ross.
“Of course.”
Ross’s face hardened.
Dana grabbed Michael’s arm harder.
May you like
And Margaret closed her eyes like the final piece had become unbearable.
