Chapter 4 - The Open Evidence Room

The evidence-room door stood open by three inches.

Not wide.

Not dramatic.

Just enough.

Enough for cold light to spill through the crack.

Enough for a muddy blanket to sit near the threshold.

Enough for Evelyn to wonder why anything connected to Margaret’s case had been handled before the story was stable.

She stepped toward it.

Ross moved immediately.

“Stay away from that door.”

Evelyn stopped.

Not because he frightened her.

Because his reaction was proof.

She photographed the door again from where she stood.

Ross’s face flushed.

Dana’s eyes darted to the blanket.

Michael saw her look and went pale.

Evelyn caught that too.

Her phone remained steady.

“Whose blanket?”

No answer.

Margaret whispered from the bench.

“That was mine.”

Evelyn turned.

Margaret’s voice trembled.

“They wrapped it around me when I was outside.”

Dana snapped, “Because you were wandering.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I was trying to leave.”

Michael finally spoke.

“Mom, please don’t make this worse.”

Evelyn looked at him.

The disappointment in her eyes hit harder than anger.

“She is bruised, handcuffed, and surrounded by your fiancée’s uncle’s officers. Worse already happened.”

Michael’s mouth opened.

Closed.

Dana recoiled dramatically.

“Fiancée? So now I’m the villain because I’m family?”

Evelyn’s gaze sharpened.

“No. You are the person performing fear while my mother bleeds.”

Dana’s tears stopped.

Just for half a second.

Then she forced them back.

But the room had seen the gap.

Ross pointed toward the exit.

“You need to leave.”

Evelyn lifted her phone.

“Say that again while the cameras are on.”

The body camera officer swallowed.

His camera stayed on.

The desk officer stood rigid near the front desk, face pale, refusing to look directly at Ross.

Ross saw the change in his own station.

Authority was leaking away.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But enough to make him afraid.
