Chapter 7 - Preserve Everything

Evelyn raised her phone and turned slowly.

Ross.

The body camera.

The open evidence-room door.

Margaret’s handcuff.

Dana’s tearless pause.

Michael’s refusal to look at his mother.

The muddy blanket.

The glass walls streaked with rain.

She captured everything in one controlled sweep.

Then she spoke into the phone.

“Preserve everything.”

The words changed the station.

No one knew who received them.

No one knew what would happen next.

But Ross understood enough to grip the edge of the front desk.

Dana’s mouth opened.

Michael’s face went slack.

The desk officer stood rigid, eyes fixed forward as if waiting for orders from someone not yet in the room.

Ross forced a laugh.

“Dramatic.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You should hope so.”

His face tightened.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“It means drama is survivable. Documentation is harder.”

The body camera officer took one careful step back from Ross.

Ross noticed.

“Everyone stay where you are.”

No one moved.

But obedience had changed flavor.

Before, officers obeyed Ross because he commanded the room.

Now they obeyed because Evelyn had made movement risky.

Margaret stared at her daughter, tears gathering in her unbruised eye.

“Evie…”

Evelyn’s expression softened for one second.

“I’m here.”

Dana snapped, “She’s manipulating your mother.”

Evelyn turned toward her.

“Dana, every time you speak, you help me.”

Dana recoiled.

Her face twisted with fury before she remembered to look afraid.

Too late.

Again.

Michael saw it.

This time, he could not look away fast enough.

Evelyn saw him see it.

So did Ross.

The precinct held its breath.
