Chapter 1 - The Jacket Over the Monster

A terrified housekeeper discovers her young daughter covering a feared Boston mafia boss with her only jacket, but his anger turns into stunned recognition when the child offers him a wooden bracelet from her late father.
Maria pushed the cleaning cart past the dark mansion library with her head lowered and her heart already beating too fast.
The mansion was too quiet at night.
Not peaceful.
Quiet like a room holding its breath.
The floor-to-ceiling bookshelves disappeared into heavy amber shadows. Firelight spilled from the stone fireplace, flashing across polished wood, leather furniture, brass lamps, and the black wingback chair facing the flames.
In that chair sat Alessandro Moretti.
Boston whispered his name in the way people whispered storms, debts, and men who never needed to repeat themselves.
He appeared asleep.
Dark styled hair.
Trimmed stubble.
Navy suit open at the collar.
Luxury watch catching firelight near his wrist.
One hand rested on the leather armrest, perfectly still.
On the table beside him sat thick envelopes of cash, a small medicine bottle, and a glass untouched by his hand.
Maria tried not to look.
Looking at dangerous men made them feel noticed.
Noticing them made them aware.
Awareness could become punishment.
She gripped the cart handle harder and kept moving.
Then the leather chair creaked.
Maria turned.
Her cloth slipped from her fingers.
Emma was inside the library.
Her six-year-old daughter stood near Alessandro’s chair, long dark hair falling over her cream dress, worn shoes soundless on the dark rug.
In her small hands, she held her only gray jacket open like a blanket.
Maria’s eyes stretched wide with terror.
“Emma, step away from him!”
Emma did not.
She stepped closer to the sleeping mafia boss and carefully spread the little gray jacket across his legs.
Her elbow brushed the thick cash envelope.
It slid toward the edge.
Maria nearly stopped breathing.
Emma caught it with both hands and placed it gently back on the table.
Then Alessandro’s eyes snapped open.
His hand clamped around the leather armrest.
He rose halfway from the chair with predatory force.
Maria lunged forward, grabbed Emma around the waist, and yanked her back behind her body.
Alessandro pointed one rigid finger toward the child.
“Come here.”
Maria spread her arms, shaking so violently her apron trembled.
“She’s only six. Please don’t punish her.”
Alessandro stood.
He crossed the firelit room like judgment.
Then he lowered himself until his eyes were level with Emma’s.
“Why did you cover me?”
Emma pulled free from behind Maria.
“Because you looked cold.”
Then she reached into her dress pocket and held out a tiny wooden star bracelet.
Alessandro’s hand moved toward it.
Then froze.
His eyes widened.
His power collapsed into recognition.

And Maria realized her daughter had just offered him something far more dangerous than kindness.
