Chapter 3 - The Star in Emma’s Hand

Emma did not understand why the room changed.

She only knew the man in the leather chair looked tired.

Everyone in the mansion moved around him like he was a fire that could burn through walls, but when she saw him sleeping alone in the dark library, he did not look like fire.

He looked cold.

So she used the only thing she had.

Her gray jacket.

It was too small for him, of course. It barely covered his knees. But Emma had learned that comfort did not have to be enough to be real.

Now her mother’s arms were tight around her ribs, and the man’s gray eyes were fixed on the bracelet dangling from her small fingers.

The bracelet was wooden.

Simple.

A tiny carved star.

No gold.

No gem.

No obvious worth.

But Alessandro looked at it like it was a key to a locked grave.

Maria saw his hand suspended inches from it.

Not reaching anymore.

Not retreating.

Frozen.

His luxury wristwatch glinted in the firelight, but the hand wearing it trembled.

Men like him did not tremble.

Maria had cleaned for wealthy families before.

She knew the small movements of power.

The lazy reach.

The silent signal.

The cold stare.

The pause before someone else suffered.

This was not power.

This was recognition.

That terrified her more.

Alessandro’s voice did not come at first.

His jaw tightened.

His nostrils flared.

His face twisted as if something inside him had been struck violently from the dark.

Maria pulled Emma farther behind her.

“Please,” she whispered, though she had already used her one line of begging. “Please, she didn’t know.”

Alessandro still did not look at Maria.

Only at the bracelet.

Emma blinked up at him, innocent and confused.

“It’s okay,” she said softly. “You can look at it.”

Maria almost covered her mouth.

“No, Emma.”

Alessandro’s eyes flicked to Maria for the first time.

Cold authority returned for half a second.

Then vanished under something older and more unstable.

“Where did she get that?”

The question came low.

Not loud.

Worse than loud.

Maria’s throat closed.

She could not answer.

Not here.

Not with cash envelopes on the table and a medicine bottle beside them.

Not with a man like Alessandro Moretti recognizing the only keepsake Emma had left from a father Maria never fully explained.

Emma looked up at her mother.

“Mommy?”

Maria’s hands shook against the child’s shoulders.

Alessandro slowly lowered his hand.

The bracelet stayed in Emma’s palm.

The fire flared behind him.

And the library filled with the terrible pressure of a question that could not safely be answered.
