Chapter 10 - The Star He Could Not Touch

No answer was revealed.
Not why Alessandro recognized the bracelet.
Not why the cash envelopes had been placed on the table.
Not what happened to Emma’s father.
Not what Alessandro would decide.
The moment remained trapped inside the dark Boston library, beneath amber firelight and heavy shadows, with bookshelves rising like silent witnesses around them.
Alessandro Moretti stood beside the black leather chair, navy suit dark against the glow of the fireplace, luxury wristwatch trembling faintly at his cuff. The small gray jacket Emma had placed over his legs now rested folded across the chair, impossibly gentle in a room built for power.
On the polished table, the thick cash envelopes remained untouched.
The medicine bottle remained unopened.
The fire reflected across both like clues no one dared explain.
Maria knelt with one arm locked around Emma’s shoulders, her faded gray maid dress wrinkled, white apron shaking with every breath. Her face was wet with fear and tears, but she did not move away.
She placed her body between her daughter and the most dangerous man she had ever faced.
Emma stood beside her, innocent and confused, cream dress soft in the firelight, worn shoes planted on the dark rug. In her small hand, the tiny wooden star bracelet rested against her palm.
She held it out because she thought kindness could settle fear.
Maria knew better.
Alessandro’s hand moved toward the bracelet.
Slowly.
Then froze inches away.
His eyes stretched wide.
His jaw slackened.
Every trace of command collapsed into raw recognition.
For one breath, the feared mafia boss looked less like a man about to punish someone and more like a man who had just seen a ghost carved in wood.
Maria saw it.
Her terror became horror.
She jerked Emma behind her, staring between Alessandro’s suspended hand and the tiny bracelet.
“What is that to you?” she whispered.
Alessandro did not answer.
Emma peeked around her mother, still gentle, still fearless.
“You can hold it,” she said.
Alessandro’s fingers trembled once.
Then curled back into his palm.
The fire flared behind him.
The antique clock ticked.
No one outside the library moved.
No one inside the room breathed easily.
Maria clutched Emma tighter.

Alessandro stared at the wooden star as if the answer to a buried life had just appeared in a child’s hand.
And the silence that followed was more frightening than any threat he could have spoken.
