Chapter 4 - Maria’s Lie Begins to Crack

Maria had never told Emma a beautiful lie about her father.

She did not say he was traveling.

She did not say he was a prince.

She did not say he would come back when the stars lined up or when Emma wished hard enough.

She told the smallest truth she could survive.

“He loved you.”

Emma asked, “Where is he?”

Maria answered, “Gone.”

“Did he leave?”

“No.”

“Did he die?”

Maria had held the wooden bracelet then, the tiny star carved smooth at the edges, and said nothing until Emma stopped asking.

That silence had become their family religion.

Do not ask.

Do not explain.

Keep the bracelet.

Keep moving.

Take jobs under names that paid in cash when necessary.

Avoid certain neighborhoods.

Avoid men who looked too carefully at your face.

Avoid questions about the father.

But Boston was not a city that allowed the past to stay buried forever.

It waited in old money libraries.

It sat in leather chairs by fireplaces.

It opened its eyes when a child tried to be kind.

Now Alessandro Moretti stood in front of Maria, and the silence she had built around Emma began cracking like thin ice.

His gaze moved from the bracelet to Emma’s face.

Then to Maria.

He studied them both with the precision of a man who had learned to read bloodlines, lies, debts, and grief in the smallest details.

Maria hated him for that.

She hated that he could look once and find fear she had spent years hiding.

Emma, however, was not afraid in the right way.

She peeked around Maria’s apron.

“You can have it for a minute,” she offered.

Maria’s body went cold.

“No.”

Emma shrank back.

The instant hurt in her face made Maria regret the sharpness, but she could not afford gentleness if gentleness let danger get closer.

Alessandro’s expression changed again.

He was not offended by Maria’s refusal.

He looked almost relieved.

As if her terror confirmed something he dreaded.

The cash envelope on the table slipped another half inch from where Emma had replaced it. No one touched it.

The medicine bottle gleamed amber beside it.

Maria saw Alessandro’s eyes briefly flick toward the bottle.

Pain crossed his face and vanished.

Too fast to understand.

Too deep to be nothing.

He turned toward the closed library door.

For one terrifying second, Maria thought he would call guards.

Instead, he lifted one finger.

A silent command.

Someone outside the room stopped moving.

Maria had not even known someone was there.

Emma clutched the bracelet to her chest.

Alessandro looked back at her.

His voice was no longer commanding.

It was almost careful.

“What is your name?”

Emma answered before Maria could stop her.

“Emma.”

Alessandro’s jaw slackened.

Not fully.

Just enough.

As if the name landed beside the bracelet and made a pattern he did not want to see.
