Chapter 7 - The Bracelet Near the Fire

Emma held the bracelet in both hands now.
The tiny wooden star rested between her palms.
Maria had seen that gesture many nights.
When Emma missed the father she barely remembered.
When other children asked why she had no dad at school functions.
When Maria worked double shifts and came home to find Emma asleep with the bracelet pressed beneath her cheek.
It was not an expensive thing.
But it was the one object Maria never pawned.
Not during the eviction notice.
Not during the winter when heat became a luxury.
Not when Emma needed shoes.
The bracelet stayed.
Because some poverty could be survived only if one small sacred thing remained untouched.
Now Alessandro Moretti looked at that sacred thing like it might accuse him.
Maria swallowed hard.
“Emma, put it away.”
Emma hesitated.
“But he looked sad.”
“He’s fine.”
Alessandro’s eyes flicked to Maria.
They both knew that was a lie.
Emma looked at him directly.
“Are you sad?”
Maria wanted the floor to open.
No one asked mafia bosses if they were sad.
No one asked dangerous men simple questions because simple questions stripped away too many defenses.
Alessandro did not answer immediately.
The fire cracked.
The antique clock ticked somewhere in the shadows.
His hand lifted again toward the bracelet.
Stopped.
Lowered.
His fingers curled into his palm.
“I knew someone who had one like that.”
Maria’s blood turned cold.
Do not reveal why.
Do not ask.
Do not breathe too loudly.
Emma’s face brightened with innocent curiosity.
“My daddy gave it to me.”
Alessandro’s eyes shut.
Only for a second.
Maria saw it.
That tiny collapse.
That violent containment.
When he opened his eyes again, his face had changed completely.
Not softer.
Not safer.
More dangerous because emotion had entered power.
Maria grabbed Emma and pulled her behind her again.
“No more questions.”
Emma protested softly, “Mommy—”
“No.”
Alessandro did not object.
He looked at Maria now with terrifying focus.
“You know more than you are saying.”
Maria’s lips trembled.
“So do you.”
The words shocked them both.
Alessandro’s face hardened.
For a second, the library remembered who he was.
Then Emma peeked around Maria and whispered, “Please don’t be mad at her.”
Alessandro looked at the child.
The anger did not vanish.
It redirected inward.
The cash envelopes remained untouched.
The medicine bottle remained unopened.
The gray jacket stayed across his legs.
May you like
And the wooden star remained between Emma’s fingers, holding the room hostage.
