Chapter 9 - The Mother Between Them

Maria positioned herself fully between Alessandro and Emma.
Her arms spread.
Her apron trembled.
Her face twisted with fear so intense it became something stronger than fear.
A warning.
A mother’s body saying no before language could be negotiated.
Alessandro watched her.
Not offended.
Not amused.
Almost respectful.
That unsettled her most.
Powerful men either ignored mothers like Maria or crushed them when they got in the way.
Alessandro simply studied her as if her terror mattered.
“Do not look at her like that,” Maria said.
Her own voice shocked her.
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.
“Like what?”
“Like she belongs to a question you want answered.”
The fire popped loudly.
Emma clutched the bracelet.
Alessandro’s jaw tightened.
That had hit something.
He stood slowly.
Maria recoiled, pulling Emma back until the child’s shoulders pressed against her skirt.
He was taller than the chair made him seem.
Broader.
A man made larger by shadows, money, and the obedience of others.
But when he stepped forward, his eyes stayed on Maria’s face, not Emma’s bracelet.
“I will not hurt the child.”
Maria’s lips shook.
“Men say that before they take things.”
Alessandro stopped.
The words entered the room and stayed there.
His expression darkened, but not with rage at her.
With recognition of another kind.
Maybe of truth.
Maybe of accusation.
Maybe of memory.
He looked toward the cash envelopes.
Maria followed the glance.
Why was the money there?
Why had it been placed so openly?
Why did the medicine bottle sit beside it?
Why did the bracelet change his face?
Why did he know her name?
Why did he look at Emma like fear and grief had become the same thing?
None of it was revealed.
Only the pressure grew.
Emma tugged Maria’s apron.
“Mommy, did I do bad?”
Maria dropped instantly to her knees and took Emma’s face in both hands.
“No. No, baby. You did kind.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
“Then why is everybody scared?”
Maria had no answer she could safely give.
Alessandro heard the question.
His face broke for one second.
Raw.
Fast.
Then controlled again.
He lowered himself slowly, not as close as before, until he was no longer towering.
His hand hovered near the bracelet but did not touch it.
Emma watched him.

Maria held her breath.
