Chapter 5 - Cash on the Table

The cash envelopes on the table seemed louder now.
Maria could not explain why.
They had been frightening from the beginning: thick, heavy, stacked beside Alessandro’s chair as if money in this house did not need hiding because everyone already knew better than to touch it.
But now that Alessandro was staring at Emma’s bracelet, the cash looked placed.
Not forgotten.
Not casual.
Placed.
Maria did not know why.
The prompt would not reveal why.
Only that the envelopes belonged to the tension pressing through the library like heat from the fire.
Emma noticed the money too.
She looked from the envelopes to Alessandro.
“I didn’t take anything,” she said.
Her voice was small but clear.
Alessandro’s face tightened.
“I know.”
Maria blinked.
That answer came too fast.
Too certain.
Most rich men assumed servants stole before they assumed kindness. Alessandro did not even glance at the envelopes when he said it.
He was still looking at the bracelet.
Maria’s fear shifted shape.
If he was not angry about the money, then his attention belonged fully to the star.
That was worse.
Alessandro lowered himself slowly back into the leather chair, not from weakness exactly, but as if standing too close to Emma had become dangerous for him too.
The chair creaked under his weight.
Firelight moved across his faint neck tattoos.
His wristwatch flashed as his hand rested near the armrest.
His eyes did not leave the child.
Maria tightened her hold around Emma’s shoulders.
“Sir, I’ll take her out. She won’t bother you again.”
“No.”
The word was quiet.
Final.
Maria froze.
Emma looked up at her mother.
Alessandro’s gaze moved to Maria.
“Not yet.”
Every instinct in Maria screamed to run.
But running from men like Alessandro inside their own houses rarely ended with distance.
It ended with doors locking.
So she stayed.
Shaking.
Breathing shallowly.
Trying to keep Emma behind the shield of her body.
A log snapped in the fireplace.
Emma jumped.
Alessandro saw it and, strangely, looked away first.
A dangerous man giving a frightened child space.
That contradiction made Maria’s stomach twist.
From the hallway came a faint sound.
A man clearing his throat.
One of Alessandro’s people, maybe.
Waiting for permission to enter.
Alessandro did not grant it.
He lifted his hand again without turning.
The unseen presence withdrew.
Maria understood then that the true danger was not that Alessandro would punish Emma immediately.
It was that he wanted to understand her.

And whatever he understood might change all their lives.
