Chapter 1 - THE HAND ON THE BEDRAIL Caleb tore the blanket from Rebecca’s body and exposed the two heavy casts immobilizing her legs.

“Get out of that bed,” he hissed. “I’m done paying for you!”
Rebecca woke with a cry.
She had been asleep beneath the bedside lamp when he entered the private room carrying coffee and flowers. For several minutes, he had spoken gently, asking whether the doctors had discussed discharge.
Then Rebecca told him she remembered the crash.
His face changed.
Now his fingers closed around the bruised flesh above her elbow. He dragged her toward the edge of the mattress despite the IV line pulling against her wrist.
“My legs are broken—stop!”
The casts scraped over the sheets. Pain tore through her hips and lower back. Rebecca seized the bedrail with both hands and locked her fingers around it.
Caleb pulled harder.
“Let go.”
“No.”
The refusal transformed him.
He released her arm, leaned over the bed, and drove both fists into her abdomen.
“You don’t get to talk back to me!”
Rebecca folded forward, unable to breathe.
The heart monitor erupted into urgent alarms.
Caleb raised one fist again.
The door opened.
Nurse Emily Carter rushed inside, caught his wrist, and shoved herself between him and the bed.
“Step away from the patient—now!”
Caleb stared at her as if he could not believe anyone had interfered.
Dr. Aaron Wells entered behind Emily while two security officers approached through the corridor. Rebecca pressed herself against the bedrail, shaking too violently to speak.
“She attacked me,” Caleb said.
Emily looked at Rebecca’s casts, the torn IV tape, and the fresh marks forming across her abdomen.
“She never left the bed.”
Caleb noticed the security camera above the open corridor door.
His confidence began collapsing.
Dr. Wells examined Rebecca while Emily preserved the heart-monitor data and locked the electronic chart. The alarm record showed the exact second Caleb struck her.
Rebecca lifted one trembling hand and pointed toward her husband.
“He caused the crash.”
Caleb went still.
Dr. Wells’s expression sharpened.
“What did she say?”
“She’s confused,” Caleb answered quickly. “The medication makes her say things.”
Rebecca looked directly into his face.
“You told me I should have signed before you drove into the barrier.”
Security restrained Caleb when he moved toward her again.
As officers led him into the corridor, Emily retrieved the visitor log from the wall station. Caleb had signed in at 11:08 p.m.
But another entry appeared beneath his name.
Charles Bell—family representative.
The arrival time was 10:41.
No one had seen Charles Bell enter the room.
Dr. Wells gently pressed Rebecca’s abdomen. Her face twisted in pain.
His gaze jumped toward the monitor.
“We need imaging immediately.”
“What’s wrong?” Emily asked.
Dr. Wells lowered his voice.
“She may be bleeding internally.”
The door handle moved again.
Everyone turned.

The corridor beyond it was empty.
👉 Caleb had been caught attacking Rebecca, but the visitor log proved someone else entered the hospital before him—and may still have been nearby.
