Chapter 8 - THE EMPTY STRETCHER The Brookhaven crew claimed they received an emergency evacuation order signed by Dr. Wells.

His signature and hospital code appeared authentic.

Emily refused to open the doors.

“There is no fire.”

The lead paramedic held up a transfer sheet.

“Rebecca Hartwell is being moved under court authorization.”

Detective Quinn examined the document through the glass.

The court order was forged.

Then the crew abandoned the stretcher and attempted to retreat.

Hospital security trapped them inside the service corridor.

Two surrendered.

The third escaped through a maintenance stairwell.

The captured workers were private contractors who believed the transfer was legal. They received instructions from Olivia Crane.

One carried a syringe loaded with sedative.

He said it had been prepared by Brookhaven’s medical director.

The label identified Rebecca as the patient.

The dose was high enough to render her unconscious for hours.

Police searched the ambulance.

Inside were restraints, a replacement hospital gown, a wig matching Rebecca’s hair, and a death certificate listing complications from the car crash.

The document was blank except for her name.

Someone had prepared both incapacity and death outcomes.

Dr. Wells examined the emergency systems.

The corridor lockdown originated from the hospital’s central risk-management office. Olivia retained remote access after leaving.

But the ambulance arrived too quickly to have traveled from Brookhaven after the board vote failed.

It had been waiting nearby.

The conspiracy expected more than one possible outcome.

If Rebecca signed, they moved her quietly.

If she refused, they created an emergency.

If staff resisted, they used a court order.

If she died during transfer, the crash explained it.

Rebecca looked toward Emily.

“They built a road around every answer I could give.”

Emily took her hand.

“You kept saying no.”

The escaped contractor left blood on the stairwell railing. DNA testing identified Nathan Price.

Nathan had disguised himself as part of the ambulance crew.

He remained inside the hospital complex.

Security searched every floor.

An officer found his jacket near the imaging department.

His badge opened the morgue, pharmacy, administrative offices, and helicopter pad.

Nathan called Rebecca’s room from an internal phone.

“You destroyed the sale.”

“You broke my legs.”

“That wasn’t the plan.”

“Everyone keeps saying that after the harm becomes visible.”

Nathan’s breathing became ragged.

“Gideon will kill me.”

“Then surrender.”

“He already sent Olivia.”

“Where is she?”

Nathan whispered:

“Inside the hospital.”

The call disconnected.

A nurse entered the room carrying medication. Emily stopped her before she reached the IV.

The woman turned and ran.

Security caught her beneath the corridor camera.

It was Olivia Crane.

She carried Rebecca’s badge and a vial labeled with Dr. Wells’s name.

👉 Olivia returned to complete the sedation personally, but her arrest left Nathan as the only conspirator still moving through the hospital.
