Chapter 9 - THE RECORDING FROM THE CRASH Olivia refused to speak until prosecutors showed her the policy on Caleb’s life.
She had not known Gideon planned to eliminate him.
Like Caleb, she discovered she was disposable only after the conspiracy failed.
She agreed to cooperate.
Olivia admitted altering Rebecca’s chart, arranging the fake nurse, providing Nathan with a security uniform, and preparing the Brookhaven transfer.
“Did you order the crash?” Quinn asked.
“No.”
“Did you know it would happen?”
“I knew Gideon wanted an injury that delayed the vote.”
“How severe?”
“He said she needed to remain hospitalized for two weeks.”
Olivia believed the vehicle’s safety system would prevent fatal impact.
Nathan controlled the modification.
She provided the hospital contingency.
Gideon provided money.
Caleb provided access to Rebecca.
Each participant handled one compartment and avoided asking what the others were willing to do.
Olivia turned over an encrypted phone.
It contained messages from Gideon using the name Chairman.
One read:
Keep Rebecca conscious enough to sign.
Another:
If she remembers the barrier conversation, increase sedation.
The most recent message had been sent after Gideon’s board suspension.
Nathan must not be taken alive.
Police intensified the search.
Meanwhile, technicians recovered the sedan’s damaged dashboard camera. The video was corrupted, but the audio survived.
Rain struck the windshield.
Rebecca confronted Caleb about the loans.
Caleb said, “Gideon promised the sale would fix everything.”
Rebecca answered, “The sale destroys my mother’s company.”
A third voice came through the car’s speaker.
Nathan.
“The barrier is ahead. Increase speed.”
Rebecca asked who Caleb was talking to.
Caleb reached toward her seat belt.
Then another voice entered the call.
Older.
Calm.
Gideon.
“Do not hesitate now.”
The audio captured the seat-belt release, Rebecca’s scream, and Caleb accelerating.
There was no deer.
No sudden obstacle.
Only a deliberate impact.
After the crash, the dashboard camera continued recording.
Caleb groaned.
Rebecca struggled to breathe.
Nathan’s voice came through the speaker.
“Is she conscious?”
Caleb answered, “Yes.”
Gideon said:
“Then tell her it was an accident until the medication makes doubt easier.”
The recording directly connected Gideon to the crash.
Police arrested him before his attorneys could move him again.
He claimed the audio had been manipulated.
Experts found no alteration.
Rebecca listened once.
Then she asked Quinn to turn it off.
She did not need to hear her own fear repeatedly for it to remain true.
Nathan’s location finally appeared on the hospital access system.
He had entered the neonatal wing using Dr. Wells’s badge.
The doctor still wore his real badge.
Nathan had created a duplicate.
The neonatal wing contained twenty-three infants.
Hospital staff began evacuating families.
Nathan called Rebecca again.
“Tell them to stop moving people.”
“What do you want?”
“Gideon’s phone.”
“Why?”
