Chapter 15 - THE NEW ENTRY Three weeks later, Rebecca could sit upright without dizziness.

Her internal bleeding had resolved. One cast would remain for another month; the other required further imaging before removal.
The physical healing was measurable.
The rest was not.
Caleb pleaded guilty to assault, fraud, unlawful medication, and conspiracy while prosecutors continued investigating attempted murder charges connected to the crash.
Gideon admitted authorizing the vehicle contingency and hospital incapacity plan.
Olivia entered federal protection and began identifying Redstone-linked facilities.
Nathan provided the encryption keys to the recovery archive.
Marcus and Adrian Vane remained missing.
Hartwell canceled the sale, recalled the fraudulent loans, and installed independent oversight. Rebecca addressed the board from her hospital bed and removed every executive who had approved decisions without speaking to her directly.
She did not promise to save the company quickly.
She promised it would never again use patient vulnerability as leverage.
Nurse Emily visited on her day off carrying a small paper bag.
Inside was the metal identification plate removed from Rebecca’s original hospital bedrail.
Rebecca ran one finger across the scratched surface.
“You held on hard enough to bend the bracket,” Emily said.
“I thought he was going to pull me onto the floor.”
“You still said no.”
Rebecca looked toward the city lights.
“Sometimes no is the only part of yourself they haven’t taken yet.”
Dr. Wells entered with the latest scan. Her abdomen continued healing, but one fracture showed unusual damage.
The bones in her left leg had been weakened before the crash.
Tiny drill marks appeared near the earlier break site.
Rebecca stared at the image.
“I never had surgery on that leg.”
Hospital records claimed she underwent a minor orthopedic procedure eight months earlier after a gym injury.
The physician signature belonged to Dr. Wells.
He had never treated her then.
Caleb may have arranged a procedure while Rebecca was sedated for what she believed was a routine joint injection.
Someone weakened the bone months before the crash so the collision would cause catastrophic injury.
The recovery plan began long before Gideon ordered the barrier impact.
Quinn entered carrying the original visitor-log station from the first hospital.
Technicians had restored deleted entries dating back one year.
One name appeared repeatedly during Rebecca’s earlier orthopedic visits.
Adrian Vane—medical transport.
He had been near Rebecca before the leg procedure, after the crash, and during the hospital attack.
Then the printer activated by itself.
The station was disconnected from every network.
A fresh visitor slip emerged.
Marcus Vane.
Destination: Rebecca Hartwell.
Arrival time: 11:08 p.m.
Rebecca looked at the clock.
11:07.
Security alarms sounded outside the room.
The corridor camera showed an empty wheelchair rolling toward the door.
Behind it walked a man in a dark coat carrying Caleb’s old coffee cup.
His face remained turned away.
Dr. Wells reached for the emergency button.
The lights went out.
From the darkness beyond the door, an older man said:
“Your mother built the first protection model for you, Rebecca.”
The handle slowly turned.
“I only taught it what protection costs.”
