Chapter 1

Airport Attorney Reveals Woman Was an Abducted Infant Before Naming the Father Who Raised Her.

Claire Ellison collapsed into the black office chair inside a private conference room at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Outside the runway windows, planes moved slowly beneath bright daylight.

Inside, her entire life fell apart on a wooden table covered with photographs, sealed files, and documents she was suddenly afraid to touch.

Margaret Shaw, the silver-haired attorney sitting beside her, caught her upper arm before she slid out of the chair completely.

Daniel Price lowered his eyes toward the thick government file.

Luis Ortega stood behind her, silent and tense.

Claire was crying so hard she could barely breathe.

Margaret leaned closer.

“Claire… Martin and Elaine are not your biological parents.”

The sentence did not make sense.

Martin was the man who taught her to ride a bike.

Elaine was the woman who packed her school lunches.

They were the names on every form, every birthday card, every emergency contact sheet.

Claire gripped the edge of the chair.

“Then who am I?”

Daniel removed a faded infant photograph from the file and placed it beside a recent picture of Claire.

He pointed gently between the two faces.

“Your birth name is Natalie Pierce.”

Claire reached toward the infant photograph, then stopped.

Her hand hovered above a baby she did not remember being.

Luis stepped forward and placed another photograph on the table.

An older image.

A uniformed officer standing near a damaged vehicle.

Claire’s crying stopped.

Luis looked directly at her.

“Martin Ellison reached the crash first.”

The room became painfully still.

Claire lifted the photograph with trembling fingers.

The young officer in the picture had her father’s face.

Younger.

Sharper.

Standing beside the wreckage connected to the child everyone had searched for.

Claire’s voice was barely audible.

“He found me… and never reported me?”

Margaret did not answer.

No one did.

And that silence was worse than any confession.
