Chapter 8

The airport conference room had no softness.

That made it worse.

Black office chairs.

Wooden table.

Water bottles.

A leather briefcase.

Runway windows too bright for grief.

No family photographs.

No couch.

No place to fall apart like a daughter.

Claire studied the files without touching most of them.

Daniel explained that some documents were sealed.

Some were pending review.

Some involved agencies that had not completed notification.

Some names could not yet be discussed because the missing-child investigation had reopened quietly.

Quietly.

That word made Claire angry.

Her entire life had apparently been quiet.

Quiet lies.

Quiet records.

Quiet fears.

Quiet people deciding when she deserved to know herself.

“Why now?” she asked.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

Margaret answered.

“Because a preservation request tied to the Pierce case surfaced during an estate review.”

“Whose estate?”

Margaret paused.

“Not something we can fully discuss today.”

Claire shut her eyes.

“Of course.”

Luis said, “I know this feels like we’re hiding things from you.”

Claire opened her eyes.

“You are.”

“Yes,” he said. “But not to control you.”

That honesty helped more than comfort.

Margaret continued, “There are people who may panic when they learn the file has moved.”

“Martin?”

No one answered.

“Aunt Rebecca?”

Still no answer.

“Elaine?”

Margaret’s expression tightened painfully.

“We do not know who knew what, or when.”

Claire looked toward the glass.

A plane lifted into the sky beyond the runway.

People leaving.

People arriving.

People believing their names matched their tickets.

She looked at her own boarding pass on the table.

Claire Ellison.

The name suddenly felt both hers and stolen.
