Chapter 2

Claire had almost missed the meeting.
Her flight to Portland had been delayed, and she had been annoyed at first.
Annoyed by the crowded terminal.
Annoyed by the overpriced coffee.
Annoyed by the voicemail from a woman named Margaret Shaw asking her not to board until they spoke in person.
“You don’t know me,” Margaret had said, “but I was asked to contact you if certain records ever surfaced.”
That was the kind of message normal people deleted.
Claire nearly did.
Then Margaret said two names.
Martin Ellison.
Elaine Ellison.
Claire stopped walking in the middle of the terminal.
Her parents lived in Spokane now, quiet and retired, the kind of people who still mailed birthday cards with handwritten notes. Martin had been a police officer before a back injury ended his career early. Elaine taught Sunday school, made peach cobbler, and cried at commercials.
They were ordinary.
That was the foundation Claire stood on.
Ordinary parents.
Ordinary childhood.
Ordinary explanations.
No siblings because Elaine had complications.
No baby pictures before six months old because a basement flood destroyed a storage box.
No extended family because Martin was “private.”
No birth hospital stories because Elaine said labor had been traumatic.
Claire had accepted all of it.
Children accept the walls they grow up inside.
Only adults learn to ask why doors are missing.
At the airport, Margaret found her near Gate C12.
She did not look like a scammer.
She looked like a woman carrying bad news carefully because it might cut both of them.
“Claire Ellison?”
“Yes.”
“I’m Margaret Shaw. I’m an attorney.”
Claire’s first instinct was to call her father.
Margaret seemed to read that.
“Please don’t call Martin yet.”
Something in the way she said his name made Claire’s stomach turn.
Ten minutes later, Claire followed her into the private conference room.
Daniel Price was already there with the file.
Luis Ortega closed the door behind them.
