Chapter 4

Martin Ellison had been a careful father.

That was what Claire remembered most.

Careful about doors.

Careful about strangers.

Careful about photographs online.

Careful about school field trips.

When she was little, she thought it meant love.

Maybe part of it had been.

That possibility hurt more than simple evil would have.

Martin checked locks twice before bed.

He never let her sleep over at friends’ houses unless he knew every adult in the home.

He hated hospitals.

He hated police reunions.

He hated news stories about cold cases and missing children.

When one came on television, he changed the channel before Claire could read the headline.

“Sad stuff,” he would say. “No need to fill your head with it.”

Elaine was gentler, but nervous.

She cried every year on Claire’s birthday after Claire went to bed.

Claire once heard her through the wall.

Martin said, “Don’t start.”

Elaine whispered, “She’s getting older.”

Martin answered, “That’s why we stay quiet.”

Claire had been twelve.

She remembered pressing her ear to the wall, not understanding why quiet sounded like a command.

Later, she forgot.

Or made herself forget.

Now every strange family habit returned with cruel precision.

No baby bracelet.

No relatives from Elaine’s side who remembered the pregnancy.

No hospital photo.

No birth story that stayed the same.

Margaret watched Claire’s face as the memories collided.

“You’re remembering things.”

Claire swallowed.

“I don’t know what I’m remembering.”

“That’s normal.”

“Nothing is normal.”

“No,” Margaret said softly. “It isn’t.”

Daniel slid another sheet forward but kept his palm over most of it.

“We are not asking you to accept everything today.”

Claire looked at him.

“Then what are you asking?”

Luis answered this time.

“To understand why we needed you here before anyone else knew we had found you.”

Found you.

Claire closed her eyes.

She had spent her entire life believing she had been kept safe.

Now she wondered if she had been kept hidden.
