Chapter 3

The first document was not a birth certificate.

That would have been too simple.

It was a missing-child bulletin.

Old.

Faded.

The photograph showed a baby wrapped in a hospital blanket, round cheeks, dark hair, serious eyes.

Claire stared at it and felt nothing at first.

That scared her.

Shouldn’t a person recognize herself?

Shouldn’t blood shout across time?

Daniel did not rush her.

He slid another photograph forward.

This one was of Claire at twenty-three, taken from a passport application.

The eyes were the same.

That was what made her cry.

Not proof.

Resemblance.

Her own face reaching backward through another name.

Margaret said quietly, “The infant in the bulletin was named Natalie Pierce.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

It was not an argument.

It was an instinct.

“No.”

Daniel nodded once, not offended.

“I understand.”

“No, you don’t. I have parents.”

Margaret’s hand stayed gently on her arm.

“You were raised by Martin and Elaine Ellison.”

Claire looked at her sharply.

“Raised?”

No one corrected the word.

That silence cut deeper.

Luis placed a water bottle near her hand. She did not take it.

Daniel explained only enough.

The Pierce family had been traveling when a crash happened outside a rural highway corridor years earlier. Emergency response had been delayed. Records became incomplete. One infant was listed as missing from the scene.

Claire’s mouth went dry.

“Missing?”

Margaret’s voice softened.

“Presumed taken before formal recovery.”

Claire stood too fast and nearly fell.

Margaret steadied her.

“No. No, that’s impossible.”

Daniel opened the file again.

“There are reasons this is being handled carefully.”

“Carefully?” Claire laughed through tears. “You just told me I’m a missing baby in an airport conference room.”

Luis’s expression tightened with sympathy.

Margaret answered, “Because if we contacted you at your parents’ house, we could not know who would reach the evidence first.”

Claire froze.

Your parents.

Not her parents.

The room had already begun changing the words around her.
