Chapter 5

Aunt Rebecca’s name surfaced once.

Only once.

But once was enough.

It appeared in Daniel’s explanation as a person connected to old communications, family contact attempts, and a chain of custody issue he refused to describe fully.

Claire caught it immediately.

“Rebecca Ellison?”

Daniel paused.

Margaret’s hand tightened slightly on Claire’s arm.

Luis looked toward the door, then back.

Claire’s voice sharpened.

“She’s my aunt.”

No one answered quickly.

That was becoming the pattern.

Every answer arrived late because truth had to pass through legal caution first.

Daniel said, “Rebecca may have information relevant to how certain records were handled.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means we are not ready to discuss her full involvement.”

Claire laughed once, hollow and frightened.

“So there is involvement.”

Margaret said, “Claire.”

“No. Don’t ‘Claire’ me like I’m fragile. You just told me my name might not be mine.”

Margaret accepted the anger without flinching.

“You have every right to be angry.”

“I don’t know who to be angry at.”

That was the worst part.

Her mind kept reaching for familiar people and finding them standing in new shadows.

Martin teaching her to drive.

Elaine brushing her hair before middle school.

Aunt Rebecca sending Christmas cookies but never visiting long.

Family friends who said she looked “nothing like either side” and then laughed too loudly.

Daniel placed the faded infant photograph closer.

“Right now, we can confirm the identity match is strong enough to justify protective disclosure.”

“Protective disclosure?”

“To tell you before the remaining parties are notified.”

Remaining parties.

Another cold phrase.

Claire looked at the documents.

“Are my biological parents alive?”

The room changed again.

Margaret lowered her eyes.

Daniel closed the file halfway.

Luis looked out toward the runway windows.

No one answered.

Claire understood then that some truths were still locked behind doors they would not open today.
