Chapter 6

Daniel placed the photograph of the damaged vehicle on the table last.

He did it slowly.

Almost reluctantly.

Claire noticed that too.

The image was old, slightly blurred, taken at an angle near a roadside scene. No readable markings. No clear license plates. Just twisted metal, emergency light glare, and a younger uniformed officer standing near the vehicle.

Claire recognized him before Luis spoke.

Martin.

Her father.

Not the father in the file.

The father who raised her.

His hair was darker in the photograph. His shoulders straighter. His face sharper, more alert.

But it was him.

Claire’s stomach dropped.

Luis spoke carefully.

“Martin Ellison reached the crash first.”

The words were plain.

The meaning was not.

Claire shook her head.

“He was a first responder?”

“Yes.”

“He helped people.”

Luis did not answer.

Claire turned to Margaret.

“Say something.”

Margaret’s eyes were wet.

“Claire, Martin’s report from that night does not account for the infant later identified as missing.”

The room tilted.

Claire gripped the chair.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel answered, “It means the official record and the later evidence conflict.”

“Don’t say it like that.”

Daniel stopped.

Claire stared at the photograph.

Martin had always told her he left active duty because of an injury and politics. He said the department turned on good men. He said paperwork mattered more than truth.

Claire used to admire his bitterness as principle.

Now it sounded different.

Like resentment toward a system he had escaped before it looked too closely.

“He found me…” Claire whispered.

Her eyes moved from Martin’s photograph to the infant picture.

Her voice almost disappeared.

“And never reported me?”

Margaret did not answer.

Daniel did not answer.

Luis did not answer.

Because none of them could soften the shape of that possibility.
