Chapter 11 - IVAN’S COUNTERATTACK

Ivan filed for divorce before I did.

Two days after the barbecue.

His petition alleged:

Mutual violence.

Destruction of property.

Financial secrecy.

Alcohol misuse.

Emotional instability.

He requested temporary exclusive use of the marital home.

My house.

His attorney attached photographs from the hidden folder.

Broken mug.

Me asleep beside wine.

A damaged bedroom door from an argument where Ivan kicked it after I locked him out—not mentioned.

The barbecue footage of me smashing the grill.

But not the part where he burned me.

Selective evidence.

Predictable.

My attorney, Natalie Shaw, looked at the filing.

“Do not panic.”

“I’m not.”

“You’re gripping the table.”

I released it.

“Can he take my house?”

“Not because he asks.”

“Can he say I’m unstable?”

“He can say anything in a petition.”

“What do we do?”

“We answer with evidence.”

Boring.

Powerful.
