Chapter 26 - THE FIRST GRILL

A year and eight months after the barbecue, Juniper Table catered an outdoor wedding.
The menu included grilled peaches.
I almost changed it.
Kayla noticed.
“We can do something else.”
“No.”
“You sure?”
“No.”
Good.
We set up a small propane grill at the venue.
My right palm had healed with pale textured scars.
Grip strength about eighty-eight percent.
Two fingers stiff when cold.
I stood in front of the grill.
Heat touched my face.
My body remembered before my mind.
Heart racing.
Sweat.
The smell of chicken that wasn’t even there.
I stepped back.
Kayla waited.
No motivational speech.
I stepped forward again.
Turned one peach.
Then another.
Nothing happened.
The grill was a tool.
May you like
Ivan had made it a weapon once.
He did not get permanent ownership.
