Chapter 12 - THE BURN CLINIC

My hand became worse before it improved.

Blisters.

Dressing changes.

Stiffness.

Occupational therapy.

The deepest area near the base of my index finger worried the burn specialist.

No graft eventually.

Thank God.

But limited grip for weeks.

Juniper Table suffered.

I could not pipe frosting.

Could not safely lift heavy pans.

Could barely chop.

My employees, Kayla and Martin, ran more than they were ready for.

We lost two weddings because I canceled.

One bride understood.

One did not.

Money mattered.

Violence does not end when the bruises fade.

It enters payroll.

Scheduling.

Insurance.

Sleep.

I hated Ivan most on mornings when I could not button my own jeans.

Buttons.
